smile on da rocks

Somehow my co-workers and I got on the topic of television shows and one person jokingly said, “I don’t know what I’m gonna do now that Flava Flav has found his love…” We, of course, made her explain. Apparently the rapper Flava Flav was the bachelor for VH1’s Flava of Love in hopes of finding a companion of sorts. The lady he chose received a “grill” of her own (that’s horribly comical).

Most of my co-workers didn’t know that there was another type of grill other than one you cook with. So, another girl and I start to explain and of course Nelly’s song comes to mind. I smile, trying without success to keep from laughing, as I sing the words to myself.

This has to be the funniest thing that has happened to me at work in the last six months if not the entire time I have worked here.

spring is here and everybody needs a new grill. Represent!

one, two, three

My nephew can now count to (at least) three.

Anywho...

A trio of cool things:

uno.
Rebecca was in last week's Citybeat. You can check it out here. She has some pretty amazing things coming up in the near future including a showing at designsmithgallery. The opening reception will take place on Final Friday this month. She's pretty fantastic. :)

And, if you didn't happen to catch Roman's new work at the last Final Friday you should definitely check it out this time around before it's too late.

dos.
Los Goldens of the ultra-cool band Ellery are gearing up for the release of "Lying Awake". Their new CD is amazing with five new songs added to the lineup.

tres.
I get to see some pretty amazing people this week and this weekend and I'm super excited. They call me Aunt Sissy.

words from words

eyes wide open
to the great train robbery of my soul
impending blindness
of the kind that's beyond my control

eyes wide open
to the secret forest beyond those tear-filled trees
heart-rending blindness
won't testify that i'm on my knees

maybe i'm a little young to care
maybe i'm a little old to cry
i don't know
maybe i'm a little weak to dance
maybe i'm a little strong to die
i don't know

concentrating
love and i'm hating myself again
impersonating
the smallest shadow of my original self again

does anybody really want to grasp
my hand and lift me to my feet? does
anybody really want to be the breeze
that frightens off this heat?

pema

"There's a common misunderstanding among all the human beings who have ever been born on the earth that the best way to live is to try to avoid pain and just try to get comfortable."

Pema Chodron, The Wisdom of No Escape

What a great first line.

Grand Canyon @ Mather's Point

The Grand Canyon is more captivating than this picture portrays.

My dad really wanted us to take this picture. He ended up getting his way and we took this using the timer on my new camera (still trying to figure it out, that's why it's not sharp).

eyes wide open

My people are important. Being around my people is important. What an amazing and refreshing weekend to be around so many people that I love and admire. There's more I thought I wanted to say, but it doesn't seem so important now.

"If there's anything we need one another for, it's to help us see Life, to hold each other's hands when we have to go down into the basements of ourselves and turn the lights on, to prod each other to spend our days wisely, to urge each other to invest our lives and time in things that matter to us, to point out beauty, to sit and be with ugliness and grief, to stir up one another's imaginations, to pass hope back and forth among one another that Life can be better in this world: that it's worth our tears and sweat and failures...And to remind each other that being with another human with confidence and quiet gentleness is the most difficult and beautiful thing we could experience." ~tasha

"People need to know they are loved. Usually, that involves walking forward side-by-side with a person into the maze of the their life with your mouth shut while your eyes speak. Keeping your opinions in your opinion bag and your tongue bloody." ~michael

Thanks for loving me. Thanks for helping me see Life. Thanks for trusting me.

So true, waiter, so true.

just like water

Comforted by the book of Isaiah and Psalms I decided I wanted more. During Lent I will commit to reading something of worth every day and practice loving kindness towards myself and others.

I'm a Survivor...

...barely.
favorite moments:
visiting the Grand Canyon with my dad
driving
standing underneath thousands of stars in what felt like the middle of nowhere.
laughing with my family
playing blackjack with daniel, ang, and lyle (and winning!)

I'll leave it at that, for now.

enjoy some lyrics:

OTR's I Want You To Be My Love

I want you to be my love
I want you to be my love
'Neath the moon and the stars above
I want you to be my love

I want you to know me now
I want you to know me now
Break a promise make a vow
I know you want me now

Like I want you

I want you to be my love
I want you to be my love
'Neath the moon and the stars above
I want you to be my love

'Cause I want you
I know all you--
All you've been through
